In Derby matches, it is very important for the two teams to struggle and win, not only for the mere sake of increasing their points, but they also have to maintain a reputation and have to preserve the name of their respective club. This is what makes football derby matches very interesting as well as popular for the people of the particular city. All these things make football derby matches all the more interesting, especially when the major football rivals indulge in a head on competition with each other.

The Inter Milan vs. AC Milan match was a very enjoyable one, and an interesting match of the season - and Inter came up really well, with a great performance against AC. This makes Inter a worthy and difficult competition for the other teams in the upcoming matches. Inter moves to the top of Series A and not only that but also ahead of AC by eleven points. The most intense football derby competition has always been between the Scottish teams Celtic and Rangers. Celtic gained a win over the old rival Rangers and the Rangers were pretty much rattled by Celtic. Now the Celtics are at the first position in the Scottish Premier League with sixty-four points, followed by the Rangers at sixty-one points. In Newcastle vs. Sunderland, the latter was the only one that had scored a victory this year. The competition between the two was very tough considering the fact that they are, indeed, long time rivals.

The football derby matches are interesting and very enjoyable, and are a source of good entertainment in many respects. The first and foremost thing in the football derby matches is that winning is a matter of prestige for the teams. The football derby matches also feature the most famous rivals against each other. The perfect example of such teams is the Celtic Vs Rangers, Inter vs. AC and Newcastle Vs Sunderland. The Celtics are in the first league position, while the Rangers have second. This makes both teams very worthy opponents for each other, accompanied with the fact that they are very old rivals.

In the Barclays Premier League match between Newcastle and Sunderland, both scored one goal and kept there was a battle for the winning post. Newcastle holds the sixteenth league position while Sunderland has the eighteenth position. Newcastle made thirteen fouls in the match and Sunderland made nineteen. Another very interesting encounter was between Inter Milan and AC Milan. After beating AC Milan, Inter are now a mere eight points away from Juventus, who are the second best. Both are traditional rivals and have been struggling for a long time to get to the top. It looked more like AC was going to be completely thrashed when they hadn’t scored a single goal, but things changed when, at the seventy first minute, young Pato scored a goal. Inter Milan successfully defeated AC Milan by a 2-1 score. All this rivalry, which is taken very seriously, is something that gives the football derby matches an even greater taste.

One of the hardest fought events in football is the Celtic versus Rangers matches. Celtic versus Rangers is about more than just football. There is a mix of politics, religion and social attitudes involved. Now you would not expect this in a place where both teams are living in the same city and are known as the ‘old firm’. Celtic play Rangers four times in a year and each match is a treat for football lovers. The games are intense, the atmosphere in the stadium is charged, and there is no way you can not get caught up in becoming a fan of either of the teams. Glasgow, Scotland, is where the Celtic Rangers games take place, and the city overflows with fans that flood to Glasgow not only from Scotland but from around the world.

Celtic started playing against the Rangers in 1988 and it is one of the oldest derbies. There is a lot of comradeship between the rival teams, but not when they are playing against each other! The old firm games are notorious for the biggest pitch invasions, arrests, and injuries among fans. Some deaths have also occurred due to this rivalry. Both the teams have won many individual titles. But right now the Rangers are ahead of Celtic in wins.

If you are a football fan and happen to be in the UK, then you will not want to miss out watching any of their matches. You will join fifty to sixty thousand other fans who witness these matches. Get your tickets early so you don’t miss out on one of the most exciting derby events in Scotland.

You would think two cities that lie just ten miles apart would share friendly ties. But where there is football involved this just does not happen. Both the cities have an old history of rivalry before the football rivalry started. The football rivalry also dates back to the nineteenth century. Both the cities strongly support their city teams and forget about being a Newcastle United fan in Sunderland and vice versa. Some of the hardest fought derbies are between Newcastle United versus Sunderland. There were restrictions on the number of fans from one city that could witness a derby match in the opposing town. This got the fans riled and there have been riots over this. There have also been players who have switched sides.

Both Newcastle United and Sunderland are equally balanced, and there is no clear winner. This is what makes this derby so exciting and a treat to witness. The Tyne-Wear Derby is the common name by which this derby is known. There are always more fans then the seating capacity of the stadium, and remember, derby matches anywhere in the UK can be quite boisterous events. But as a football fan, this is one of the derby contests that has to be seen live.

The Birmingham Derby refers to the football matches between the Aston Villa and Birmingham City football clubs. It is also known as the Second City Derby.

The clubs had their first game in 1879 with City, then known as Small Heath, winning the game. Villa went on to win their first game in 1887. This is regarded as one of the most highly rated and most passionate derbies in the country. Their matches are usually very hotly contested, with one of the most dramatic games being the 1925 league game played at Villa Park where the home side was ahead with three goals to nil and eleven minutes on the clock - and City went on to draw the matches in the last few minutes.

Usually, violent clashes between angry fans have taken place at matches between the two clubs due to the intense rivalry. Late kickoffs have often resulted in drunken fans starting fights. In the April 20, 2008 match between the two where Villa won the game five to one, a fan named Christopher Priest was killed when he was hit by a van outside the stadium. This game had the largest margin for the winning team in almost forty years. Before this, in 2007, riots outside the game resulted in injuries to twenty police officers. Since games often result in injuries to fans and security personnel; the security is usually very high to prevent any untoward incidents. However with thousands of fans coming in to watch the games, these cannot be completely prevented.

Football games between the Manchester teams of Manchester City and Manchester United are known as the Manchester Derby. The two teams are extremely competitive, with Manchester United fans constantly pointing out that the City team has not won a major trophy in years and the City fans pointing out that United isn’t even a Manchester team, since Old Trafford is right outside the city boundaries.

Starting in 1881, when the first game between the then-unnamed teams was played, the competition has been fierce. A lot of the derbies between the teams have resulted in injuries to players due to the excitement and passion the players have, and the amount of competition. From the 1990s onwards, Manchester United has been dominating the game, with City not being able to win many derbies. However, the 2007-2008 derbies were both won by Manchester City. The game in Old Trafford on February 10, 2008, was the first time Manchester City had beaten Manchester United in the league at their home stadium, and in fact this was also the first season where Manchester City had won both the derbies. However, United was able to prevent City from winning a third consecutive game in the first derby from the 2008-2009 season when Rooney scored a goal, and thus one Manchester United the game.
