Newcastle Versus Sunderland
You would think two cities that lie just ten miles apart would share friendly ties. But where there is football involved this just does not happen. Both the cities have an old history of rivalry before the football rivalry started. The football rivalry also dates back to the nineteenth century. Both the cities strongly support their city teams and forget about being a Newcastle United fan in Sunderland and vice versa. Some of the hardest fought derbies are between Newcastle United versus Sunderland. There were restrictions on the number of fans from one city that could witness a derby match in the opposing town. This got the fans riled and there have been riots over this. There have also been players who have switched sides.
Both Newcastle United and Sunderland are equally balanced, and there is no clear winner. This is what makes this derby so exciting and a treat to witness. The Tyne-Wear Derby is the common name by which this derby is known. There are always more fans then the seating capacity of the stadium, and remember, derby matches anywhere in the UK can be quite boisterous events. But as a football fan, this is one of the derby contests that has to be seen live.
