Sports – Manchester Derby
Football games between the Manchester teams of Manchester City and Manchester United are known as the Manchester Derby. The two teams are extremely competitive, with Manchester United fans constantly pointing out that the City team has not won a major trophy in years and the City fans pointing out that United isn’t even a Manchester team, since Old Trafford is right outside the city boundaries.
Starting in 1881, when the first game between the then-unnamed teams was played, the competition has been fierce. A lot of the derbies between the teams have resulted in injuries to players due to the excitement and passion the players have, and the amount of competition. From the 1990s onwards, Manchester United has been dominating the game, with City not being able to win many derbies. However, the 2007-2008 derbies were both won by Manchester City. The game in Old Trafford on February 10, 2008, was the first time Manchester City had beaten Manchester United in the league at their home stadium, and in fact this was also the first season where Manchester City had won both the derbies. However, United was able to prevent City from winning a third consecutive game in the first derby from the 2008-2009 season when Rooney scored a goal, and thus one Manchester United the game.
